The European Commission will support the establishment of Ukraine's Energy Efficiency Fund
The trilateral gas talks provide unique opportunities to Kyiv, Brussels, and Moscow to discuss gas supplies before winter heating season start, according to the European Commission Vice-President for the Energy Union, Maros Sefcovic.
"We want to re-launch the successful trilateral format of gas talks involving Ukraine, Russia, and the European Commission. In the past, this forum has proven its usefulness. Russia as an exporter, Ukraine as a transit country and the EU as the main importer share a common interest of predictability. In this sense, I am also looking forward to meeting with Russian authorities in the next weeks", Maros Sefcovic wrote on the FB page of the EU Delegation to Ukraine.
The European official also noted Ukraine's success in reforming energy sector and welcomed the Ukrainian government's decision to unbundle Naftogaz.
"It is now important to implement this decision swiftly and consistently in the months ahead. Would the country manage to increase its energy efficiency levels to the EU average level, the savings achieved would be greater than the energy consumption of Spain over a whole year. Ukraine could thus even become an exporter of energy", the Vice-President emphasized.
Naftogaz of Ukraine earlier addressed the European Commission to establish a monitoring mission in order to check facts of critical pressure drops in the Russian gas transport system (GTS) before entering the Ukrainian GTS. As Naftogaz claimed, it could endanger the stability of gas transportation to Europe.
