Ukrainian officials claim purchasing Russian gas is not up for bargaining

Ukrainian state-owned national gas and oil company "Naftogaz" expects to hold negotiations with Russian monopolist "Gazprom" in the nearest future.

According to the "Naftogaz" chairman Andriy Kobolev, the parties will discuss the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine's territory. The purchase of Russian fuel for the Ukrainian consumers is not on the agenda.

"We have the following position - we expect the negotiations with "Gazprom" and hope that they will happen. Gas transit, but not its purchase will be the main topic of the discussion. We are very comfortable with the European suppliers," Kobolev said.

In March the European Commission said it is ready to mediate over gas supply negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

Ukraine has managed without Russian gas imports over the past winter due to the sufficient reserves and alternative supplies from Europe.

Naftogaz and Gazprom are demanding USD 25.7 billion and USD 29.2 billion from each other respectively over the transit contract.
