"Right now there does not appear to be any criminality. We're just waiting for the M.E. (medical examiner) to determine a cause of death," officer Sophia Mason told Reuters.

A man was found unconscious by the diplomatic mission's officers upon their arrival at the building and later pronounced dead by paramedics, the police also report.

The NYCPD officers were withholding identification of the man pending family notification, Reuters say, while Russian consulate officers were unavailable for comment.

According to the latest information from the Russian embassy in the U.S., the dead person was a consulate commander on duty.

"The preliminary cause of death is heart attack", the spokesman for Russian mission in the USA Nikolai Lakhonin was quoted as saying by the Kommersant newspaper.
