Ukraine-Slovakia border blocked for the 3rd day

Activists demand a longer stay permit for cars with a foreign registration

In the city of Uzhhorod, car owners who don't want to get customs clearance for their vehicles and drive them with a foreign registration, blocked the road in the direction to Slovakia.

The protesters are demanding cars with European registration plates should be allowed to stay in Ukraine at least a couple of months. At the moment, owners of such cars need to cross the border every 5 days.

In order to avoid legal punishment for obstructing the checkpoint's operation, activists closed off the road leading to the border checkpoint, explaining to police that their cars suddenly broke down. However, police officers initiated criminal proceedings for blocking the road.

"Winter is coming, petrol is expensive. Staying 5 hours at the border just to cross it and come back is all wrong. State authorities should change it", one of the activists said
