Lviv hosts international sumo competition

First Lviv sumo tournament welcomes Ukrainian fighters and wrestlers from Poland and Azerbaijan 

Sportsmen from Ukraine, Poland and Azerbaijan took part in a sumo competition, Sumo Lviv Open Cup 2016. It was the first sumo tournament in the history of Lviv.

The competition took place among men from a lightweight class; men and women from openweight class also competed in the tournament.

Organizers say that Ukrainian sumo wrestlers are one of the best in Europe - such as Japanese sumo legend Taiho Koki is of Ukrainian descent and his real name is Ivan Boryshko.


The main objective of the contest is to increase the popularity of the sport in the region. Organizers also want to promote healthy lifestyle and allow sportsmen get experience in international competitions.

The tournament was hosted at Lviv sports complex "Halychyna". The organizers of the contest are Lviv Regional Federation of Sumo and communal organization "Evolution of Society".

Sumo was born in Japan and it is one of the most popular Eastern full-contact wrestling sports. The rules are quite simple: one of the fighters should push his or her opponent out of the circular ring or make the opponent touch the ground with anything other than soles of his or her feet.
