Ukraine's ambitious U-Park Festival gathers world's top bands: review by Alex Bondarenko

On 6 and 8 July, one of the biggest music festivals in the Ukrainian history took place at Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kyiv. American band Red Hot Chili Peppers and British band Muse became headliners of U-Park Festival. Six more music bands also performed at the event.

For the first time in the history of Opimpiyskiy Stadium, the stage was located at the 'left side' of the stadium, and not at the front. The organizers have also ordered the unique 'K1' sound system exclusively for the festival to make the sound similar all around the stadium.

Ukrainian band The Hardkiss opened the festival. The Hardkiss is traditionally regarded as pop band. But at the festival they sounded more like hard rock, and Ukrainian audience appreciated it a lot.

British band Nothing But Thieves made their debut in Ukraine after The Hardkiss gig. British-American duo The Kills performed an impressive set later and warmed up the audience before the RHCP.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have already played in Kyiv in 2012 on Olimpiyskiy Stadium. This year they came to support their latest album 'The Getaway' and played five songs from it.

During the RHCP set some problems occurred. A lot of people were disappointed at the awful sound quality all around the room. During the song 'Nobody Weird Like Me' the sound disappeared at all. After the gig organizers explained, they did not cause the problems with sound because only RHCP staff members had access to all the equipment during the performance.

Anyway, the Red Hot Chili Peppers played the massive set of greatest hits. Evergreen rock anthems 'Can't Stop', 'Californication', 'By The Way', 'Under The Bridge' made Ukrainian audience go crazy and sing along with the band onstage. For the encore, Anthony Kiedis threw off his top and sang two more songs 'Soul to Squeeze' and legendary 'Give It Away'.

On the 8th of July the festival continued. Ukrainain ethno-rock band Shana opened second festival day. After that Ukrainians could listen to British band My Vitriol and fins Poets of the Fall. British duo Hurts' gig became warm up before the colossal Muse show.

Before playing in Kyiv Muse have finished their world tour and played a headlining set on Glastonbury festival. The band has already played in Ukraine two times before – in 2011 and 2007.

This time the British band performed with the world-class visual show on the background perfectly fitting the idea of their latest album 'Drones'. Before the gig in Kyiv, the band had registered in the social network VK.COM and asked fans to choose one song they want Muse to play in Kyiv. This song was 'Butterflies & Hurricanes' from the album 'Absolution'. As the additional present for their supporters the band played the second song form the fan-list. It was 'Assassin' from the album 'Black Holes And Revelations'.

The organizers of the festival called it the most important event in the musical history of Ukraine. It was hopefully not the last festival in Kyiv with the world-class lineup.
