Legendary creatures listed in the International Red Book of Endangered Species
A unique animal - the only one takin in Ukraine - now resides in the Mykolaiv zoo southern Ukraine.
It is reported by Volodymyr Topchiy, Mykolayiv zoo director, on his Facebook.
"For a long time we have been dreaming about these mythical animals, who inhabit in bamboo forests of northern-eastern India, Tibet, Nepal, and Chinese provinces Sichuan and Shaanxi. Now we have the first baby takin in Ukraine", Topchiy writes on Facebook.
The unique animal's name is Richard, the zoo director says. "He is something between a baby hog and a baby bear. In a word, he is the goat antelope", added Topchiy.
Richard was born to healthy parents who came to Ukraine from the Baltics.
The takins are one of the rarest animals in the world. They are known for interesting features - somewhat of a cross between a goat and an antelope, some even say the takin resembles a buffalo or a moose. Takins are listed in the International Red Book of Endangered Species.
Yuriy Kyrychenko/Mykolaiv Zoo Assistant Director: "Despite the odd looks, this is the closest relative to a goat. This couple is unique in Ukraine, and their offspring is the first one in the country."

Richard is cuddly and curious. Staff say he loves people and is quite happy with all of the attention he's getting. His mother's milk is the primary nutrition but he is attempting to start eating regular takin food.
India and China the unique animal is considered to be a national treasure.
