Disposal dump in Kyiv region on fire

Situation worsens as waste products exhume metan while decaying

Another garbage catastrophe is about to happen in Ukraine. This time Kyiv region is under threat. Garbage landfill in the village of Trypillya close to Kyiv is burning harshly. According to the fire service, nearly two hectares of land are currently caught with fire. The situation worsens, as the waste products discharge marsh-gas that intensifies the flame.

The firemen say the fire started because of abnormal heat. In view of the ever decaying rubbish it is hardly possible to remain here without a special mask. The ecologists though say the air around the area is suitable for the people. Local authorities complain the landfills started causing problems long time ago.

Anatoly Dehtyar, Head of Trypillya Local Council: "It is a spontaneous landfill. They have been planning to establish one more here, but the local residents protested against it, and it has worked out fortunately."

Numerous spontaneous dumps emerge everywhere. According to the local residents, the only way out is to hire special trucks that come and take away the waste products. One of such cleaned fields is now planted with the sunflowers.
