Opera singer, killed in conflict zone, awarded Order for Courage

Opera singer Vasyl Slipak was killed in Donbas warzone on June 29

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko presented Vasyl Slipak with award posthumously 

A soloist of the Paris Opera House and Ukrainian volunteer Vasyl Slipak has been posthumously presented with Order of Courage. This is according to the press-service of the Ukrainian President.

Petro Poroshenko has awarded the Opera singer, who died in the Donetsk region fighting the separatists, for his bravery and "selfless service".

"President Petro Poroshenko has awarded famous Ukrainian opera singer Vasyl Slipak Order for Courage of the I grade (posthumously) for personal courage demonstrated during the protection of state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and selfless service to the Ukrainian nation", the message said.

Vasyl Slipak died in eastern Ukraine on July 29. He was shot and killed by a militant sniper. Prior to the conflict, Slipak had been living in France for 19 years. In 2014 he quit his European career and returned to Ukraine to fight against the Russian-backed separatist forces.
