Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets have intercepted Russian Blackjack bombers approaching the UK airspace, UNIAN informs referring to the UK's Ministry of Defense report on Twitter.

"We can confirm that quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth intercepted two Russian Blackjack bombers and escorted them while they were in the UK area of interest. At no point did the Russian aircraft enter UK territorial airspace," the Royal Air Force spokesperson wrote.

The ministry has also published images of the aircraft that approached the UK area of interest.

The Tupolev Tu-160 (NATO reporting name Blackjack) is a Soviet supersonic, variable-sweep wing heavy strategic bomber. According to open sources, on 2015 eleven Tu-160s were reported combat-ready in Russia with the 121st Guards Heavy Bomber Regiment at Engels/Saratov.

As reported, on July 29 two Polish F16 fighter jets have intercepted a Russian light aircraft flying towards the city of Krakow.
