UNESCO to consider Cossack songs in Need of Urgent Safeguarding

UNESCO will decide whether Cossack's songs of Dnipropetrovsk region should be included in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is meeting from 28 November to 2 December in Addis-Abeba, in Ethiopia to decide on future of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.

Cossack's songs of Dnipropetrovsk region belong to expressive Ukrainian folk musical art and include patriotic, heroic marches, which were performed by famous Zaporozhian Cossacks, who had originated from modern Dnipropetrovsk region. The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine supported Dnipropetrovsk regional council for the introduction of Cossack's songs on the list of Urgent Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

The meeting will be run under the chair of Yonas Desta Tsegaye, Director General of Ethiopia's Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage. The Intangible Heritage Committee meeting is formed out of 24 States Parties to UNESCO's Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The bureau is focusing on traditional songs, rituals, celebrations and know-how.

The committee will inspect issues concerning intangible heritage in emergency situations caused by conflict or natural disaster. This will help to call for safeguarding measures, which can lead to social unity and reconciliation.

The List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding now contains 43 particularly vulnerable elements of the living heritage. The inclusion to the list helps the States Parties to the Convention provide international help.

Apart from Ukraine, the Intangible Heritage Committee will examine four more countries for inscription on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. These countries are Portugal, Uganda, Cambodia and Botswana.

The Intangible Heritage Committee will also examine 37 requests for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. At present, the list has 336 inscribed elements.
