Amnesty International is accusing Turkey of illegally sending refugees back to Syria.

John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International Director for Europe and Central Asia: "They're busing people over, putting them in the hands of the local militia operating there who are taking them to camps. Camps that are in conditions that are awful and getting worse. With a blatant disregard for the rights of those individuals, their welfare, their family ties."

John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International Director for Europe and Central Asia: "There is a change in border practices, particularly with new Syrian arrivals, dating back to October last year - the time which EU-Turkey negotiations around their deal really started. It is clear that this is something that has come from a central Turkish authority, this isn't from an operation by local migration or police officials."

John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International Director for Europe and Central Asia: "The Turkish government needs to stop this blatantly illegal and inhumane practice. There is no room for any practice to be returning any individuals to a conflict zone. In turn, the EU must be encouraging Turkey to stop this and certainly cannot even contemplate returning Syrians when there is any real risk of sending them back to Syria from Turkey exists."
