Berlin officials call on Russia to release Nadiya Savchenko

Second day of Savchenko's hearings started

Berlin officials call on Russia to release the Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko for humanity reasons.

The press-officer of the ministry for foreign relations in Germany said on Monday the whole trial does not correspond to legal and democracy international standards.

Berlin is ready to send a medical team to Nadiya Savchenko.

This comes after Ukraine asked Germany for assistance. But there is still no permission from the Russian side, according to German authorities.

Officials say the trial against Savchenko is against the spirit of Minsk agreement and her release would wind down political tensions between Kyiv and Moskow.

The minister for foreign relations Frank Walter Steinmeier is set to visit Moscow on March 23. He is scheduled for talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.
