Biden compares special status for Donbas with Texas

US Vice President on 'some tough decisions' Ukraine has to make

US Vice President Joe Biden says Ukraine is willing to give the Donbas a special status, although it is a 'really tough stuff' the country has to do.

'They're willing—I'm convinced they will do it', Biden said, emphasizing the fact that first Russia must provide the security guarantees. 

At the same time, he compared the Donbas region with Texas. 

'When you say the Donbas is going to have a special status and you're going to amend your constitution, it's like saying, OK, you know, Texas is going to have a special status that we don't want because we want Mexico to have more influence in Texas. And we're going to pass that through the United States Congress', Biden stated.

He also reiterated his support for Ukraine. 

'We cannot—we cannot let Russia succeed in what their overall objective is. They don't want to invade. They want to totally destabilize the government, bring it down, and as a result get everything they had before', Biden said.
