E.U. Ambassador says Ukraine should move further towards decentralisation

Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine Jan Tombinski says that the European Union will provide EUR 97 million to support local governance in Ukraine.

Tombinski said the European Union had developed a large-scale programme to support local governance in Ukraine with a budget of EUR 97 million to be jointly provided by the European Commission, Germany and Poland.

This programme will focus on supporting Ukraine's fund for regional development, he said.

Additionally, Tombinski noted that Ukraine should move further towards decentralisation, as it is one of the most important elements in eliminating the shortcomings of the country's centralized governance model.

Ukraine plans to get about USD 10 billion in financial assistance from international financial institutions, including USD 5.8 billion from the International Monetary Fund and over USD 1.5 billion from the World Bank under new loan programmes.
