Donbas conflict is ‘confrontation of civilizations', Pietro Parolin claims
The Western world unfairly forgot the military conflict in eastern Ukraine, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said on June 15-20, according to Deutsche Welle.
During his working visit to Ukraine, Pietro Parolin launched an initiative aimed at rendering assistance to Donbas war victims. He also urged Western countries to remember about this conflict, branded Ukrainians as ‘martyrs', and declared that ‘the Catholic Church wants to be a reconciliation tool'.
The Vatican representative made a number of statements on behalf of the Holy See and emphasized the importance to respect the international law considering Ukraine's territorial integrity.
Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko urged Vatican to help release Ukrainian hostages (illegally held in Russia or in militant-held areas in Donbas), facilitate a Schengen zone visa-free trips for Ukrainians, and coordinate with Kyiv Vatican's policy on Donbas and Ukraine's Russia-occupied Crimea.
Representatives of Ukrainian churches and various religious organizations met the Holy See envoy with a favourable reception and endorsed Poroshenko's idea to invite Pope Francis to visit Ukraine.
