Austrian authorities say sanctions should stay in place
In spite of the complaints from the business sector, Austria continues to support the sanctions against Russia. That is according to the Ambassador of Austria to Ukraine Hermine Poppeller.
The Ambassador spoke about the sanctions at the presentation of the project titled 'External Audit Policy: Ukraine-Austria' by the Institute of World Policy Research. Poppeller acknowledged that Austria is suffering from the sanctions imposed on Russia as well. Austria's agricultural complex was affected more than any other branch of the country's industry as farmers were forced to seek other markets to sell their products.
According to Poppeller, the influx of Russian tourists also decreased greatly due to the Russia's currency weakening, which was affected by the sanctions.
The Ambassador claimed that the business community demanded to stop the sanctions against Russia. Poppeller said "these businessmen represent not only Austria, but the whole Europe,'
"Austria supports new sanctions against Russia. There are no doubts about the reasons for which these sanctions were imposed. Austria does not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea. Also, Austria is looking forward to seeing the end of the war in Donbas, fueled by Russia. Our country supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine," Poppeller added.
