Former British colony Australia says it wants Britain to stay in E.U.

Britain will hold a referendum on E.U. membership on June 23

The former British colony of Australia wants the UK to stay in the European Union. The announecement comes just weeks before Britain holds a referendum on E.U. membership.

Julie Bishop, Australian Foreign Minister: "While Australia acknowledges that the referendum on Brexit is a matter for the British people, Australia believes it would be in our interests if a strong United Kingdom remained part of the European Union. The E.U. is a significant trading partner for us, a strong U.K. as part of the European Union, would be in Australia's interests."
