Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine speaks of maintaining sanctions against Kremlin

US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst on the sidelines of the Washington Nuclear Summit

Speaking on the sidelines of the Washington Nuclear Summit, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst says the West must maintain sanctions on the Kremlin if the Minsk peace deal to end fighting in eastern Ukraine is to succeed.

The punitive measures against Russia will be up for renewal at the EU in July. A number of member states have already stated the sanctions will not automatically be prolonged.

John Herbst, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine: "The Minsk Peace Deal is a positive factor towards helping Ukraine reclaim the Donbas. But it can't be Minsk as interpreted by the Russians. It's Minsk as interpreted by the Europeans and the United States."
