Ukraine wants sanctions on those involved in abduction of pilot
Ukraine is pressing the E.U. to impose sanctions on people involved in the abduction of pilot Nadiya Savchenko. Kyiv has passed to Brussels a list of 46 names, among them Russian prosecutors and investigators.
Savchenko is on trial in Russia for alleged involvement in the murder of two Russian journalists. Ukraine calls the proceedings a ‘brutal violation of human rights.' The topic was at the top of the agenda for Ukrainian President Poroshenko as he met EU leaders in Brussels.
A visa-free regime for Ukrainians was also discussed as was the prolongation of existing sanctions on Russia. French president Hollande and German Chancellor Merkel say the punitive measures will remain in place until Moscow fulfills its part of a peace deal aimed at ending fighting in eastern Ukraine. The Kremlin has been supporting separatist forces in the region for two years.
