The destruction of the Jungle has prompted protests from local humanitarian groups
French police are on the scene monitoring the last stages of the demolition of the Calais migrant camp known as "The Jungle."
A spokesman for the region says it is hoped the operation can be completed within a matter of days. Thousands of migrants have converged on Calais over the past year. Many attempt to cross the Channel into Britain.
France says anyone evicted from the camp has been offered alternative accommodation or encouraged to leave the area by bus for one of the country's 102 reception facilities.
The destruction of the Jungle has prompted protests from local humanitarian groups. They say about 3,400 people including women and children were living in the earmarked area, more than triple the official estimate.
