Latvia spots three Russian ships in exclusive economic zone

Baltic country concerned over increasing number of similar incidents

Latvia's National Armed Forces have spotted three Russian ships near the country's borders and reported on this on Twitter.

According to the posting, on August 6, three Russian ships entered Latvia's exclusive economic zone 9 nautical miles away from the border: Boikiy, Admiral Essen and Dimitrovgrad.






The Russian Admiral Grigorovich class frigate Admiral Essen was earlier spotted at a distance of seven nautical miles from Latvia's exclusive economic zone.

270 incidents involving Russian military aircraft and ships approaching Latvian borders were reported in 2015.

Latvia's National Armed Forces reported more than 140 provocative flights, as well as 130 cases of Russian submarines and ships close to Latvian territorial waters.
