Warsaw will return the visa-free travel for residents of Kaliningrad after the security issues will be fixed

Local border traffic was suspended for both Ukraine and Russia a month ago, ahead of NATO summit and World Youth Day. Poland explained it with security concerns. Border traffic with Ukraine is already restored.

Interior Minister of Poland Mariusz Błaszczak says Warsaw is not ready to do the same for Russian exclave, Kaliningrad region, as there still exist threats for state security.

Poland does not specify the kinds of threats or whether they existed before suspending local border traffic.

Local border traffic is a form of facilitating crossing borders for citizens of two neighbouring states living in a frontier area. It means residents of border areas may regularly cross a common state border without a visa, in order to stay in the border area of the second state. Such trips can be for social, cultural or family reasons.
