German parliament argues on giving Ukraine more reconnaissance assets and defensive weapons
Bundestag is divided: ruling Christian Democratic Union of Germany wants to provide Ukraine with more weapons of defense. On the contrary, Social Democratic Party says new weapons hardly can help to change the situation.
The Christian Democratic Union of Germany insists that Ukraine needs military aid. It should guarantee appropriate defense on indisputable Ukrainian territory, says Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.
Moreover, new reconnaissance assets and weapons would prevent soldiers and paid separatists with Russian weapons from moving forward into Ukrainian territory. Union's member Elmar Brok insists that Germany should help Ukraine in a way that could not be used by Russia to violate Minsk agreements. At the meantime, Europe should not curtail or lift sanctions against Russia, because OSCE reports that Russia-backed separatists violate the ceasefire much more often than Ukrainian army, said Brok.
At the same time, Social Democratic Party says giving defensive weapons to Ukraine will simply add to conflict escalation. Taking into account Russia's capabilities, Ukraine hardly could overtake it.
Germany's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also does not support the idea of providing Ukraine even with defensive weapons. The Ministry says it is not a way of solving the conflict.
