Canada's minister of national defence calls relations with Ukraine ‘unique'
Earlier this week Canada's Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan and other Canadian officials travelled to western Ukrainian region of Lviv. As part of the official program Canadian delegation visited International peacekeeping and security centre in Yavoriv, where Canadian troops train Ukrainian soldiers.
During the visit The Minister of Defence of Ukraine joined the Canadian delegation and thanked for their continued support of the Ukrainian army.
Stepan Poltorak, Minister of Defence of Ukraine: "I would like to thank the ambassador – Mr. Vaschuk, for his continued support of Ukraine during our current problems. I would like to say that the work between our two ministries, which we currently do, will improve and increase."
Apart from observing the exercises, both Canadian and Ukrainian delegations attended a simulation of combat life-saving practice performed by the Ukrainian soldiers. This was done after the troops completed a 5-day course delivered by the Canadian combat medics. Following the practice we spoke to one of the instructors:
Sergeant Gauthier, senior medical instructor: "They did very well, seriously. They know exactly what they have to do, the good moment and seriously I'm very comfortable to be treated to one of those guys for sure."
After the exercises there was an official ceremony, where Minister of Defence of Ukraine awarded medals to both – Ukrainian and Canadian soldiers for their service to Ukraine. This joint service was also recognized by the Canadian Minister of National Defence.
Harjit Sajjan, Canada's Minister of National Defence: "The unique relationship that Canada and Ukraine have - it's not just between the two nations and it's not just word. Our soldiers, who are working together - you can see that relationship alive. There is no greater relationship, when two militaries can work together and train together."
With Russia's ongoing aggression in eastern Ukraine, Canada's continued cooperation with the Ukrainian armed forces is a crucial element in the fight against the Kremlin.
