Poland will have American military base constructed by 2018
An American missile defence system is about to be built in Poland. Although the official construction in the Polish town of Redzikowo is scheduled to begin on May 13, the preparatory work has already started. The base is expected to begin operating in 2018, as Radio Poland reports.
According to Polish media the base will be serviced by about 300 infantrymen and civilians, essential elements of the system, such as the radar and launch pad SM-3, will be provided by AMEC Programs Inc. located in Georgia, U.S.A.
The contract on the building of the military base was signed in February 2016. It cost over USD 182 million.
Meanwhile, the up-coming July NATO summit will take place in Warsaw, has been a matter of talks between President of Poland Andrzej Duda and the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The former is on a three-day visit to Canada which began on Monday.
The Canadian Prime Minister stated that unity of NATO should be the priority for the organisation.
"The importance of the unity of NATO needs to be underlined in Warsaw, so that all allies respond uniformly to the new threat which has come from the East", as Minister in the Presidential Chancellery Krzysztof Szczerski confirmed.
Poland has been advocating for the consolidation of NATO's eastern flank since Russia's annexation of Ukrainian Crimea in 2014.
