Off the Books: How much Ukrainian ousted president's party invested in corruption

The second set of accounting books of Ukraine's Regions Party revealed

Tens of millions of dollars were 'invested on Ukrainian politics'... The Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda has published the documents which reveal the inside facts of the clan oligarchic system built in the country within the last twenty years.

This is the 'spreadsheets' of the Party of Regions (the party of former President Viktor Yanukovych*), which came to the hands of journalist-turned-MP Serhiy Leschenko as well as ex-deputy head of Ukraine's Security Service Victor Trepak. The incriminating report totaling 22 pages.

The expenses invested in the politics are itemized, with a total cost amounting to more than USD 66 million. The Party of Regions members spent the money on 'the Party needs' for less than six months in 2012 - everything ranging from buying the electoral votes to ordering custom-made interviews and reports on major Ukraine's TV channels "INTER" and "ICTV".

The list of those involved is striking and includes: both former and current MPs, ex-ministers, members of the Central Election Commission, top managers of TV channels, heads of polling agencies and political strategists.

Huge sums were allocated not only for building up a political corporation under the Party of Regions, but also for allowing its leaders' to enjoy their 'small pleasures'. For example, the speadsheet reports on USD 67,000 'prepayment for a watch'.

According to Trepak, the Party of Regions spent about USD 2 billion on political corruption

* Viktor Yanukovych fled his opulent mansion outside Kyiv in February 2014 following mass protests against his decision to reject an E.U. Association Agreement and move the country towards Russia. The new Ukrainian government says Yanukovych and his associates stole tens of billions of dollars during his tenure. As of January 13, 2016, former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was on the top of the list of the world's most corrupt persons according to Transparency International's Unmask the Corrupt campaign.
