One soldier killed, seven wounded overnight in eastern Ukraine

Fighting in Donbas shows no sign of abating

One Ukrainian soldier was killed and seven more wounded in clashes with Russian-backed separatist forces. The militants shelled Ukrainian positions 27 times over the last day. That's according to Oleksandr Motuzianyk, Ukraine's military spokesperson.

"The area near Avdiivka remains the hotspot. One serviceman died in grenade shelling near Svitlodarsk water storage basin. Two more soldiers were wounded in the direction of Mariupol," Motuzianyk said.

In Mariupol direction, Russian-backed separatist forces violated ceasefire nine times. Near Maryinka, militant provocations with 82mm mortar were reported. Near Shyrokyne, the separatist forces shelled Ukrainian army positions using 120mm mortar. In Vodiane, they used armoured fighting vehicles.
