Over 40,000 Russian troops amass near Ukraine border - intel

Russian soldiers equipped with heavy weapons including tanks and multiple launch rocket systems

As part the Caucasus 2016 military drills, Moscow has amassed 41,600 soldiers near the Ukrainian border.

This was reported by the Intelligence Main Directorate at Ukraine's Defence Ministry on Facebook.

Units of the Southern Military District (the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don), the Western and Central Military Districts, the Northern Fleet, aerospace forces and airborne troops, which currently undergo 'a sudden inspection of their combat and mobilization readiness', are put on full combat alert.

The Kremlin has deployed the unit, which comprises 14 battalion tactical groups, eight company tactical groups and two motorized rifle brigades involving 41,600 soldiers - along the Ukrainian border, in the temporarily militant-occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions and in the annexed Crimea. 

Russian troops are equipped with four tactical missiles Tochka-U, 298 tanks, 1,566 armoured combat vehicles, 363 artillery systems and 169 multiple launch rocket systems.

468 military aircraft and 303 helicopters are ready for combat to support ground operations of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border.

Meanwhile, combined Russian-backed separatist forces continue violating the Minsk ceeasefir4e deal in eastern Ukraine and using the banned weapon to launch attacks on Ukrainians troops. 

The highest number of attacks are recorded in Donetsk and Mariupol directions.

According to Ukraine's intelligence officers, Moscow mostly focuses on maintaining the combat readiness of its troops, upgrading frontline engineering equipment, improving fortification equipment of advanced positions and replenishing fuel and lubricants.
