Poland celebrates Armed Forces Day

Military parade followed by civilian paramilitary organisations and re-enactment groups

Poland is celebrating the Armed Forces Day. Festivities and military picnics have been planned throughout Poland. On Sunday, on the eve of the holiday, the soldiers and civilian personnel of the Polish Army have been awarded medals and distinctions.

The Armed Forces Day started with the military parade in Warsaw. One thousand Polish soldiers along with the representatives of the armed forces from 12 other countries. are reported to participate in the solemn march. The Head of Poland's Armed Forces, President Andrzej Duda also took part in the show. Starting with laying the flowers on the Memorial of Unknown Soldier, he later awarded eight officers of the Polish army, appointing them on General's posts.

In the midday, the participants of the parade, as well as the spectators of the show, watched the military jet trainer aircrafts PZL TS-11 Iskra flying from the north to the south leaving behind red and white smoke symbolising the colours of Polish national flag.

For the first time, marching with the soldiers will be members of civilian paramilitary organisations. The parade will be closed by cavalry, the Representative Orchestra of the Polish Army, and participants of re-enactment groups.

On Monday, August 15th, the country marks the 96th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw. In 1920 the Poles, led by Józef Piłsudski, defeated the advancing Red Army. It was first celebrated as a national holiday between 1923 and 1947, and restored as Army Day in 1992.
