Ukrainian president says Kremlin wants the elections to be held 'under the gun'
Restoring Ukraine's sovereignity over the currently occupied territory in the east is the key provision in the observance of Minsk agreements, President Petro Poroshenko has said.
"The issue of border security and return of Ukraine's control over the uncontrolled area of Ukrainian-Russian border is the key provision in the implementation of Minsk agreements," Poroshenko noted.
"Yesterday [Russian President Vladimir] Putin said we should provide political resolution, hold [local] elections, and only then deal with the ceasefire, and restore control," the President added. "This is their understanding, a scenario for holding elections under the gun of Putin's special forces."
On Friday, G7 leaders supported the extension of sanctions against Russia linking the move to Moscow's failure to implement Minsk agreements.
