Poroshenko: Ukraine and the EU cannot keep silent on 'brutal violation of human rights'

Kyiv pressing Brussels for sanctions on people involved in abduction of Ukrainian pilot Savchenko

Ukraine is pressing the EU to impose sanctions on the people involved in the abduction of pilot Nadiya Savchenko.

The country's president Petro Poroshenko says the 28-nation bloc cannot keep silent on the issue of political prisoners. Savchenko is on trial for involvement in the deaths of two Russian journalists as well for crossing Russia's border illegally.

Many U.S. and E.U. politicians have called the trial a sham. Savchenko says she was smuggled into Russia by militant forces an hour before the journalists were killed.

A verdict in her case is expected around March 21. Poroshenko shares his thoughts with Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty's Rikard Jozwiak on the issue.
