High-ranking FSB, defence and interior ministry officials are on the firing line
Russian President Vladimir Putin sacked a range of high-ranking FSB, defence and interior ministry officials who have defied his warning and joined Russia's Academy of Sciences.
Last week Putin threatened to fire the officials-turned-academicians, saying that such a "moonlighting" does not allow them to devote enough time to their main jobs.
Among those who lost their jobs are deputy Head of Presidential Affairs Department and the Head of Medical Department Konstantin Kotenko, head of registration and archives of the FSB Lieutenant-General Vasily Khristoforov, head of the Main Military Medical Directorate of the Ministry of Defence Alexander Fisun and Deputy Interior Minister - Head of the Investigation Department of Ministry of Internal Affairs Alexander Savenkov.
Almost all the officials have been dismissed "on their own will", except Khristophorov who has "reached the age limit for performing military service."
Kremlin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the dismissal of senior officials is linked to the academy's electing them as members.
The move is seen as part of Putin's show to ordinary Russians, suffering in an economic slowdown, that he won't stand for corrupt or lazy officials.
