Poor attempt to deny that Crimea is Ukraine, Ukrainian mission to NATO said.

Russia blocked the UNSC statement on Crimea, proposed by the Ukrainian delegation. The statement, meant for press, concerned Moscow's decision to change the occupied peninsula status within Russia.

"Poor attempt to deny the undeniable. #CrimeaIsUkraine", Ukrainian Mission to the UN posted on Twitter.

Earlier President Putin terminated the "Crimean Federal District" within Russia and integrated it into the Southern Federal District with the administrative center in Rostov-on-Don. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry slammed the move and filed a formal protest.

"Any Russian attempt to manipulate Crimea status is null & void. How about attaching Crimea to Far East or Ural federal district, work better?", Ukrainian permanent representative to the UN Volodymyr Yelchenko said.

Crimea was an autonomous region within Ukraine until it was illegally seized by Russia in March 2014. Kyiv and the West have called on Moscow to withdraw from the peninsula in accordance with the international law.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry previously said, international sanctions against Crimea, imposed by the West after the annexation, could now be expanded to cover the whole Southern Federal District.
