May 5 air strike on refugee camp killed at least 28
Russia has blocked a UN Security Council statement condemning the air strikes hitting a refugee camp in Idlib, Syria, Ukrainian media outlet Ukrinform reports citing Ukraine's mission to UN.
"Russia has blocked a draft press statement in the UN Security Council as to the airstrikes on refugee camps in the Syrian province of Idlib on May 5," the mission said.
The Russian side has explained it considered the situation "unclear."
The draft press statement of the Security Council expressed deep concerns about the reports of civilian deaths in the Syrian refugee camps on May 5. The document urged all sides to respect the norms of international humanitarian law and human rights, and to immediately start investigation of the airstrikes.
On May 6, Ukraine initiated a draft press statement by the UN Security Council. During the vote, Russia was the only Security Council member to block the draft.
