Russian helicopter downed in Syria

Fate of three crew members and two officers yet to be determined

A Russian Mi-8 military transport helicopter was shot down in the rebel-held Syrian province of Idlib on Monday, according to the Russian defence ministry, Interfax reports.

Three crew members and two officers are reported to have been onboard the chopper. Their fate is yet to be determined.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor earlier reported the pilot was taken from the wreckage, according to Reuters.

Images shared on social media purportedly showed a dead body and Russian identity documents taken from the crashed helicopter.

Russian forces are supporting President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's five-year-old civil war.
