Sentsov and Kolchenko, former residents of Crimea, were accused of planning attacks on the Russia-occupied peninsula and sentenced to 20 and 10 years behind bars respectively.

On March 10, Ukrainian Justice Ministry officially asked Russia to extradite Ukrainians held in Russian jails, including Nadiya Savchenko, Oleh Sentsov, Yuriy Soloshenko, Olexandr Kolchenko, and Henadiy Afanas'yev.

On March 23, Sentsov and Kolchenko were officially acknowledged by Russia as Ukrainian citizens. This entitles Kyiv to insist on their extradition to Ukraine.
