Turkey downed a Russian fighter jet on November 24 near the Turkish-Syrian border
Turkish authorities have arrested a man suspected of killing a Russian pilot last November. The Hurriyet newspaper reports Alpaslan Celik was detained in a restaurant in the Aegean coastal city of Izmir. Here he comments on the incident involving the pilot.
Alpaslan Celik, deputy commander of Syrian Turkmen brigade: "There has been an attack, backed by Russian forces, after we launched an offensive in the Red mountains. When a Russian jet crossed Turkish airspace it was immediately shot down by Turkish jets."
"Both of the pilots were retrieved dead. Bodies are on the other side. My comrades will bring them. Our comrades opened fire into the air. We all did and they died in the air."
The shooting down of the jet triggered a tense standoff between Russia and NATO member Turkey, with Moscow imposing a raft of economic sanctions on Ankara in retaliation.
