Trump, Clinton make further gains in race for the White House

Republican Marco Rubio drops out after losing Florida to Trump

US Republican front-runner Donald Trump has won three more nominating contests and pushed rival Marco Rubio out of the race for the White House.

Trump's wins in Florida, Illinois and North Carolina take him closer to the 1,237 delegates he needs to win the party's nomination to be presidential candidate. But many Republican leaders are dismayed by Trump's rhetoric and believe his policy positions are out of step with core party values.

For the Democrats meanwhile Hilary Clinton looks to be cementing her place as the party's nominee. She recorded wins in Florida, Illinois, Ohio and North Carolina.

Those victories cast further doubt on the ability of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders to overtake her.
