Ukraine must obtain free visa regime as soon as possible, says Herashenko

Domestic issues in the EU, particularly on the suspension mechanism, must not affect decisions on visa-free travel for Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada deputy speaker Iryna Herashenko claimed during the Ukraine-EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.

"Ukraine's position: the nation has fulfilled all 144 of the necessary demands for visa-free regime. And we will get across to our EU partners a position that Ukraine must obtain the free visa regime," she said.

"The EU domestic issues scarcely affect the things making Ukraine suffer. It's all about society, not politicians," she added.

According to RFE/RL reporter in Brussels Rikard Jozwiak, introducing EU free visa regime can be postponed to summer 2017, as European officials seem to fail approving a suspension mechanism by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the Europarliament president Martin Schultz claimed that suspension mechanism can't be approved because of the position of France, Belgium, Italy and Germany.
