Consuls refer to numerous cases of ‘abusive treatment' to Ukrainians
As the number of cases involving unlawful detention of Ukrainians on the territory of the Russian Federation continues to rise, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry Department of Consular Service issued a warning concerning those citizens who plan to visit the neighbouring state.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is concerned over the continuing practice of unwarranted detention of Ukrainian citizens in the Russian Federation, the lack of humane treatment towards Ukrainians from Russian law enforcement agencies, their incompatible with human dignity conduct, and exercising unacceptable methods of physical and psychological pressure, including torture" the statement reads.
In particular, the recent cases of detention or arrest of Ukrainians showed that ‘foreign objects' were allegedly ‘placed' in their personal belongings, including drugs.
In connection with this, Ukrainian consular service advised: "to stay vigilant and attentive in contact with any strangers, including Russian officials who are authorized to carry out customs, passport, and all other controls."
With the reference to all the incidents, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommended "to realistically assess the risks and threats" before planning to travel to Russia.
