Department of state reiterates its position on respecting the integrity of Ukraine's territory
The US has called on Russia and Ukraine to avoid any actions that might aggravate the situation on the administrative border between Crimea and mainland Ukraine.
During August 11 daily press briefing, Department of State Press Office's Director Elizabeth Trudeau called the tension a "very tense and very dangerous situation."
Trudeau called for the "avoidance of any actions that would escalate the situation there."
"We continue to remain in close touch with international partners on this, but we believe now is the time to reduce the tensions, reduce the rhetoric, and get back to talks," she said.
Trudeau also reiterated the US's position recognising Crimea as part of Ukraine.
"We do understand that there is violence and we do recognize Ukraine's right to defend itself and defend its own citizens," she added.
On August 10, the UN Security Council convened for an urgent meeting concerning the growing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, including the latest developments on the administrative border between Crimea and mainland Ukraine.
