Lawmakers looking to replace Islam Karimov who was confirmed dead on September 2
The Parliament of Uzbekistan is to elect an interim President to replace Islam leader Karimov, who recently passed away.
According to BBC Russia, the lawmakers from both Lower and Upper Chambers of Parliament are expected to gather to discuss the issue on September 8.
The late President of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov suffered from a stroke on August 27. After a long series of unconfirmed rumors and uncertainty, the government finally declared his death.
The 78-year-old ruled the country since 1990. His Presidency was described by human rights organizations as a dictatorship, it was said the use of torture under him was systematic.
Karimov had often justified his harsh ruling by the alleged danger Islamic extremists posed.
