Summit Ukraine-EU starts in Brussels, but visa-free regime implementation is not on the agenda
Cooperation between Ukraine and EU, Minsk talks, Russia sanction and Association agreement performance are to be discussed at today's summit in Brussels. Yet, announcing visa-free regime for Ukraine is not planned, told Hryhoriy Zhygalov, Radio Freedom correspondent, to TSN news service.
According to Zhygalov's information, the decision is postponed because of France. Paris does not agree to sign the suspension mechanism regulation. Some analysts say it could be dragged until presidential elections in France. They are scheduled on April 2017. Looks like the real time for the visa-free regime to be announced next summer.
The summit is planned as a working dinner. Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko will previously meet with EU heads - Donald Tusk, Martin Schulz and Jean-Claude Juncker.
One of the key documents to be signed is mutual understanding memorandum on energetics. In the draft document, EU calls Ukraine its "key transit partner". Another topic to be discussed is the so-called "winter pack agreement" with Russia. It is expected that the European Union will provide help to Ukraine in case the winter would be harsh.
The summit participants will also discuss the Netherlands' decision not to ratify the Ukraine-EU Association agreement.
