15% of respondents want Ukraine to join the Kremlin-led Eurasian Customs Union
55% of Ukrainians support the idea of Ukraine deepening its ties with the European Union, according to the survey ‘Dynamics of socio-political views in Ukraine' conducted by the sociological group Rating upon request of the International Republican Institute.
15% of respondents want Ukraine to join the Kremlin-led Eurasian Customs Union (comprising Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan).
Another 15% of respondents did not know which way to choose.
Last year the number of those supporting the pro-European scenario for Ukraine's economic development decreased by 2% - in November 2015, support of Ukraine-E.U. membership was at 57%.
Most of the pro-European integration supporters reside in western and central Ukraine – 82% and 62%, respectively. In eastern Ukraine the numbers of those supporting the E.U. integration and the Kremlin-led Eurasian Customs Union are almost equal – 31% and 30%, respectively.
In southern Ukraine, 40% of respondents would like the country to join the E.U., while 25% are after its closer relations with the Eurasian Customs Union.
The survey was conducted throughout Ukraine (except for the Russian-backed separatist-occupied territories in the Donbas region and Russia-annexed Crimea), in February-March 2016.
