Chairman of human rights organization discusses Nadiya Savchenko's ‘guilty' verdict

Human rights advocate on possible exchange of prisoners with Russia

Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko has been sentenced to 22 years in prison by a Russian court. Judges found her guilty on charges of complicity in the deaths of two Russian journalists and of crossing the Russian border illegally.

For the duration of her case her legal team have said the charges are fabricated and a guilty verdict was a foregone conclusion. They expect to fight for her release through diplomatic channels. Many analysts suggest Savchenko could be released by means of a prisoner exchange between Kyiv and Moscow. The global community continues to call on Kremlin to immediately release the Ukrainian pilot...

Ukraine Today is joined by Chairman of Human Rights Organization Ukrainian Helsinki Union Oleksandr Pavlichenko to discuss Savchenko's verdict.

‘We have to call it ‘the so-called verdict', because it has no legal grounds and it should be annulled. And the view expressed by the world leaders prove this as well.'

‘Various international institutions – such as the European court on human rights might be involved, but for this Nadiya Savchenko needs to exhaust all local remedies in Russia.'

‘The ‘guilty verdict' is the demonstration of the position of Russian President ‘we will do whatever we want to do. We will go further, we are strong and we will prove our force no matter if we're right or wrong.'

‘It is difficult to predict what happens in the future [with the exchange of Nadiya Savchenko].'
