The powerful eruption was caught on camera by local journalist Turi Caggegi. The video shows ash and smoke bursting hundreds of metres into the air as lava gurgles from the summit.

Mount Etna is Europe's highest active volcano and has erupted on an ongoing basis throughout modern history. Its summit is more than 3,200 metres high and often changes in height after an eruption.
