At least 17 people are evacuated as firefighters battle the blaze: Russian Media
UPDATE: The flames had spread to the third, fourth and fifth floors of the five-story-building, and reached the roof, Russian media report.
STORY: Staff in a Russian Defence Ministry building have been evacuated after part of the building caught fire.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick black smoke rising from the central Moscow complex on Sunday morning, April 3.
Defence Ministry officials say the blaze was sparked by a short circuit within the electricity network. Firefighters now have the fire under control.
"The fire broke out on the third floor of the five-storey building belonging to the Russian Ministry of Defence, on the Znamenka street. 40 people managed to leave the building on their own, while five more people were rescued", TASS reports.
Some Russian media say that at least 17 people were evacuated. The rescue works continue.
