Since 2013 former minister suffered from acute form of blood cancer
Former German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has died at the age of 54.
He passed away in hospital in Cologne where he was being treated for leukaemia.
Westerwelle started his political career in the early 1980s by joining the Free Democratic Party of Germany. He went on to lead the party from 2001 to 2011.
During Angela Merkel's second term as Chancellor from 2009 to 2013 Westerwelle held the post of Foreign Minister.
