Worried over refugees, Baltics begin to erect border fences

Latvia builds a border fence with Russia to prevent migrants crossing over illegally

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are tightening ID controls and erecting fences on their eastern borders, worried the Baltic region will become a new entry point for refugees as migrant routes through the Balkans become harder.

On Wednesday Latvian Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis said in an interview with Latvia Public Radio that 80 million euros would be necessary to reorganise the eastern border of Latvia and improve the capacity of the country's border guard, with an estimated achievement date of 2020.
